On the 21st of May 2024, teachers involved in the WAI project prepared two workshops focused on Tools for Mental Health. The events were organized with the aim of providing teachers with knowledge about tools to help manage the mental well-being of students.
Workshop Overview
The workshop was conducted by Irena Wozniak, Nataša Gumilar Papotnik, Mateja Petrič Podvršnik, and Andreja Rozman, who recently attended capacity training on AI and managing anxiety organized within the scope of the EU Erasmus+ project "Wellbeing and Anxiety" (WAI). With an engaging and interactive approach, presenters guided teachers through various aspects of mental health, emphasizing the importance of self-care, stress management, and emotional resilience. They also presented several applications that students (or teachers) can use to help manage their stress levels.Key Topics CoveredUnderstanding Mental Health: Teachers learned about the different dimensions of mental health and its significance in their daily lives.Role of AI in Managing Mental Health: The workshop introduced the role of AI in managing mental health, such as early detection, personalized support, and clinical validation.
AI Application in Education: Teachers reflected on their own use of AI in the classroom, for instance using different learning platforms and gathering data to support student learning outcomes.Mental Health Apps: Teachers were introduced to several mental health apps.Interactive SessionsOne of the most engaging parts of the workshops was the interactive sessions, where teachers participated in group activities and discussions. These sessions allowed teachers to learn more about the applications, share their experiences, learn from each other, and express their views and concerns about the role of AI in current and future education.Participant FeedbackThe feedback from participants was mixed. Many expressed that the workshop provided them with valuable insights and practical tools that they could incorporate into their work with students. However, there was an overwhelming concern about digital addiction and data privacy. "I like that one of these apps offers meditation and sends positive and encouraging thoughts to teenagers!" – Lidija, teacher of Business Studies"I liked the focus on positivity." – Natalija, teacher of Slovene‘’The app requires a lot of users’ personal data.’’ – Tomaž, teacher of metalurgyConclusionThe Tools for Mental Health workshop equipped our teachers with better skills to navigate conversations on mental well-being and AI. We are committed to continuing our efforts in promoting mental health awareness and providing our students with the support they need to thrive
